[Game recap provided by Joe Davis of the Montgomery Biscuits.]
MOBILE, AL – The Mobile BayBears (5-2) scored twice off Dane De La Rosa in the bottom of the ninth to complete a comeback over the Biscuits (4-3) 6-5 after John Matulia had led off the top of the ninth with a go-ahead homer Monday at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Ollie Linton started off the ninth with a walk against De La Rosa, then stole second and moved to third when Ashley’s throw bounced off Chris De La Cruz’s glove. Evan Frey then singled to score Linton and tie the game at five, and advanced to third on a Kory Casto single. With one down, Konrad Schmidt pulled a groundball inside of third to score Frey and complete the comeback.
The Biscuits had staked a 4-0 lead in the game, getting two in the second on a De La Cruz single and a passed ball. They’d add two more in the fifth on a Nevin Ashley double and a Chris Nowak bounce-out.
Biscuits starter David Newmann tossed four scoreless to begin the game, but the BayBears jumped on him in the fifth, getting doubles from Ed Easley and Konrad Schmidt, a two-run double from Frey, and a two-run homer from Collin Cowgill to tie the game at 4-4.
Matulia’s homer made it 5-4 off Roque Mercedes (3-3), who, ironically, picked up the win.
Newmann took a no-decision, allowed four runs (three earned) over 4.2, striking out five and walking two. De La Rosa (4-1) suffered his first loss. BayBears starter Tom Layne took a no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits over 7.0 innings.
Rashad Eldridge and Matulia each went 2-3. Henry Wrigley was 2-4 in his Biscuits debut.
RHP Jeremy Hall faces off against LHP Wade Miley at 12:05 Tuesday.
