HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Biscuits (38-26) scored six runs in the fourth inning and got five solid innings from Alex Torres to beat the Huntsville Stars (29-37) 9-4 on Wednesday at Joe Davis Stadium, dropping their magic number for a first-half title down to three.
The Biscuits struck first, getting back-to-back two-out doubles from Chris Nowak and Leslie Anderson in the first to make it 2-0. Huntsville scored once in the second to cut it to 2-1.
The big fourth inning began with a Cody Cipriano walk. After Cipriano stole second, Drew Anderson singled him home to make it 3-1 Biscuits. Emeel Salem then walked, and Rashad Eldridge followed with an RBI single and Ashley with a two-run double to make it 6-1. Matt Fields would chip in a run with a single, and John Matulia finished the scoring with a sac-fly to make it 8-1.
Montgomery added one in the eighth on a Cipriano single. The Stars got three runs agains Rayner Oliveros in the eighth inning to complete their scoring.
Cipriano led the Biscuits with a 3-4 night, while Ashley, Nowak, Leslie and Drew Anderson all pitched in two hits.
Torres (7-3) became the first Biscuit to seven wins, allowing a run on three hits through five innings, striking out seven and walking two. Huntsville starter Michael Bowman (6-5) allowed seven runs on six hits and five walks in just three innings.
LHP David Newmann will throw for the Biscuits in game two Thursday night against Huntsville RHP Mark Rogers at 7:00 CT.
