[Game recap provided by Joe Davis of the Montgomery Biscuits.]
MONTGOMERY, AL – Biscuits pitchers issued a season-high ten walks, and despite another pair of homers, the Biscuits (1-1) fell to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (1-1) 11-6 on Wednesday at Riverwalk.
The Biscuits had used a Nevin Ashley three-run homer in the third to spark a four-run inning to answer two Jaxx runs in the top half, taking a 4-2 lead. The Jaxx responded with a run in the fourth to cut it to 4-3, and chased Biscuits starter David Newmann from the ballgame with three more in the sixth to take the lead for good at 6-4.
Any comeback chances were squashed in the eighth. After Sergio Espinosa retired the first two Biscuits, he and Paul Phillips allowed five two-out tallies to make it 11-4.
Montgomery got a solo-homer from Matt Fields and an RBI-groundout from Emeel Salem in the ninth inning to finish the scoring.
Ashley went 2-5 on the night, driving home three. West Tenn’s Scott Savastano fell one short of the Southern League record for walks in a game, earning four before singling in his final plate appearance.
Newmann (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings, while West Tenn Mauricio Robles (6-4) benefitted from a load of run-support to get the win despite allowing four runs in his five innings.
RHP Jeremy Hall will throw for the Biscuits on Thursday against double-A first-time RHP Jarrett Grube at 7:05.
