Mid-Season Organizational Statistics: Hitting

As we reach the mid-point of the minor league season, I thought it would be interesting to see how the organization looks together as a whole. I have combined the statistical categories that are part of the weekly reviews and have listed the top 10 in the organization. Then as a bonus, I have included the Tampa Bay Ray's leader in each category so we can see how the minor leaguers match up on paper to their big league counterparts. This is the first of a three part series and will focus on the hitting leaders.

  1. Who would have thought that the Hot Rods would have anybody on this list the way they started out this season. Chris Murrill has been over .300 for most of the year and Tyler Bortnick has really picked it up lately. Tyler was just named Midwest league hitter of the week. Congrats to both players.

  2. dang didnt know Beckham had 4 triples. Thanks for putting this info together. How long do you think until the Rays may promote Bortnick to Charlotte?

  3. I just want the record set straight that it wasn't me contributing to either of the comments above :-)

Seriously, thanks for the nice comments about my son Tyler. I would love to see him get promoted but that is out of his control.

Other than Murill, none of the Hotrods hit in April. Once several of them started hitting in May and June, they righted the ship offensively. They have overwhelmingly speed on the team and Brady Williams uses it aggressively. Morrison may be the fastest player in all the minor leagues and Murill is right there with him. Morrison has freakish athletic ability (see triples and steals list above). He would have made a great football wide receiver but no doubt he'll be a fine baseball player.

Speaking of Murill, he is a fine player, a nice kid, and a good teammate who plays the game the right way. He does not get his just due I think because of where he was drafted but I believe he has a big league future. He reminds me of Brett Gardener of the Yankees - looks-wise and style-wise but he may have more upside than Gardner.

Mark Thomas is another one to keep your eye on at catcher. He is a good athlete with an athletic body as opposed to a classic catcher's body (shorter and stubby who can't run). He has good tools behind the plate and with a strong lower half to his body, has good power potential at the plate.

  4. Daniel~I enjoyed your comment. Being from the Hudson Valley, it's nice to hear how the players are doing at BG. Your son, Tyler, is a wonderful guy -both on and off the field. We are so glad we can consider him our friend. We're proud of him and the fact that he was given the honor of being named, "Player of the Week." I couldn't agree more about Chris Murrill not receiving his,"just due." We loved watching him at HV. He's still doing great at BG, and yet, you rarely read about him. Honestly, I wish there was a way to throw the draft pick numbers away, once the games begin. I'd like to see credit go to those who actually produce, more than someone who's every game is critiqued just because he's a "high pick." I also expect big things from catcher Mark Thomas. We used to love watching players try to steal off Mark~ what a powerful arm he's got. I'm so glad his bat came around last year. He's definitely someone to watch.
