It took 12 innings of baseball to determine the winner, but a solo home run by Anthony Scelfo lifted the Charlotte Stone Crabs to a 1-0 win in a pitchers duel against the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The game was a classic pitching duel from the start. The Stone Crabs used Shane Dyer, Marquis Fleming, Josh Satow and Matt Bush on the mound. The four pitchers combined to shut-out the Cubs and only allow a combined 4 hits and stuck out a total of 18 hitters. Through the course of the game, they only allowed six baserunners.
The Stone Crabs threatened several times throughout the game, going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. But it wasn't until the twelfth inning before they finally pushed a run across the plate. With two outs in the inning, Scelfo blasted his third home run of the season to produce the only run of the ball game. It was all that was need as Bush came in to close out the game and secure the victory.
Dyer was solid in the start but walked away with a no-decision, pitching 7 1/3 innings and allowing just 2 hits while striking out 9 and walking 2. Fleming followed with 1 2/3 no-hit innings with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Satow earned the win and improved to 2-1 by pitching 2 shut-out innings with 4 strikeouts. Bush returned from the DL and earned the save with a shut-out inning and 2 strikeouts.
The Stone Crabs (29-24) return home to Charlotte Sports Park on Saturday to kick off a four game series against the Clearwater Threshers (30-25). Nick Barnese (4-3, 3.81) will be making the start for Charlotte against Heitor Correa (4-4, 5.90) for Clearwater. On a promotional note, the world class entertainment act Zooperstars will be entertaining fans between innings of Saturday night's game.
