MOBILE, AL – For the first time in franchise history, Biscuits (45-34) pitching tossed their third consecutive shutout, allowing just three hits against the Mobile BayBears (42-37) en route to a 2-0 on Friday at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Alex Torres (8-3) allowed just two singles over 6.1 innings, striking out five without his best stuff. Heath Rollins, Sergio Espinosa, and Matt Gorgen combined for 2.2 scoreless relief innings, with Gorgen (16) working a one-two-three ninth for the save.
The Biscuits have now held the BayBears off the board for 23 straight frames. The shutout was their 12th of the season, three more than the previous two seasons combined.
Chris Nowak hit a solo-homer in the first off BayBears starter Pat McAnaney in the first to make it 1-0. Craig Albernaz hit a two-out single in the second to plate Cody Cipriano who had started with a walk, completing the scoring at 2-0.
Chris De La Cruz led the Biscuits with a 3-3 night. Cipriano and Albernaz each went 2-2.
With the win, the Biscuits move into sole-possession of first in the South Division in the 2nd half and in the overall standings.
LHP David Newmann opposes LHP Tom Layne in a rematch of the series’ first game on Saturday. The sixth and final game of the set begins at 7:05.
