Rays 13th Round Pick - 420th Overall: Tanner English

Their second high schooler from South Carolina (Guerrieri was the first), English is toolsy but might be a tough sign.

BaseballAmerica (rated #9 in South Carolina):
The top hitters coming into the season after Carson were Hunter Cole, a third baseman, and 5-foot-9 outfielder Tanner English. English is more likely to get drafted now as he's at least a 70 runner on the 20-80 scale whose speed plays well in center field. He has an average throwing arm, and some scouts think he'll be an average hitter as well. He generates surprising bat speed despite his small stature. English has signed with South Carolina and would start as a freshman, replacing Bradley in center field, so he's considered a tough sign.

  1. That's a good call for the team. The replacement should help them have more wins.

  2. anner English is a 2011 OF/RHP with a 5-9 165 lb. frame from Murrels Inlet, SC who attends St James HS. Shorter athletic build, compact strength. Very quick twitch athlete. 6.37 runner, quick to the ball, very clean loose release, top level arm strength, low on line throws, pure centerfield tools. Balanced hitting stance, simple one piece swing, quick hands, could develop a better trigger, short to the ball, aggressive swing, plus raw bat speed, ball jumps hard, line drive swing plane. Also pitched, steady 88 mph fastball, simple delivery, high 3/4's release, threw strikes. Impressive high level tools, great approach to the game. Very good student, signed with South Carolina.

  3. English became the 19th commitment of the 2011 class, which is in the midst of the seven-day early signing period. The right-handed hitter was previously the crown jewel of the Coastal Carolina recruiting class until last week when he decided to change paths.
