Rays 5th Round Pick - 180th Overall: J.D. Davis

Another 3B, this time from the high school ranks.

BaseballAmerica (rated #36 in Northern California):
At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, third baseman J.D. Davis is a good hitter with a lot of strength and above-average power. His swing is more about strength than pure bat speed, which concerns some scouts. He also has a stocky body with a thick lower half and will have to watch his conditioning as he gets older. He is already seen as a baseclogger. Davis also pitches and has been up to 93 mph off the mound, with a curveball and a changeup. His arm strength and body type make scouts think he might be worth trying at catcher. Davis is committed to Cal State Fullerton.

  1. The kid has a 6 pack and is built and is by no way chunky. Check out his photo's on Maxpreps. He's listed at 235 but he is currently at about 215 lbs

  2. Not sure who wrote this report but the Rays are getting someone who has been a corner infielder most of his high school career and #1 starting pitcher. His junior and senior year were outstanding and he was named the Cal Hi Sports California Junior Player of the Year for California. He was recently clocked at 94 by 8 MLB scouts in a playoff game and he received offers from over 10 schools including Oregon, Cal, and Sacramento State finally settling on Fullerton. The Rays were said to have considered him a supplemental 1st round pick, not sure what happened to change that.
