The Rays have signed one of the top catching prospects out of the Dominican Republic with Eric Otanez. (At least) the Blue Jays, Astros and Cubs were also linked to him. Ben Badler of Baseball America broke the news.
Otanez is a 16-year-old righthanded hitter out of La Academia. He is listed at 6-foot-2 with 195 pounds. Scouting reports suggest that he is fairly athletic for a catcher and that he has great catching tools. Especially his arm seems to be a plus. He has a strong arm and gets rid of the ball quickly on throws to second. His defensive tools are ahead of his bat, but he could be a solid hitter and has shown the ability to leave the yard in batting practice.
He's also a bright kid who's expected to graduate high school at age 16. There are no signing terms officialy available yet, but Otanez was ranked by Baseball America as the latin prospect who will sign for the 36th highest bonus.
