Rays Minor League Hitting

Here are the Rays minor league hitters through Sunday's games, sorted by OPS. I limited it to players with 75 or more plate appearances to remove injured and part-time players. I included the four minor leagues totals that the Rays affiliates play in and the organization total to give some points of reference.

Not much good news early on from the position players.

  2. It means we're far enough into the season that numbers are starting to mean something and very few guys are hitting well. I usually look for .825 and up, some people use .800 since it's a round number. You want a number above league average since that includes reserves, org players, guys called up to fill in for injuries (who really don't belong at that level), and players who have been cut due to poor performance. Either way we only have about 8 guys hitting "well" at this point. And a couple of those guys are org players who are years too old for the league, Anderson is 30 in AAA and Coon is 29 in AA.

So overall it's a disappointing showing so far.

  5. I am starting to get concerned about the hitting/fielders in this organization as a whole. We only have 3 regular starters that are homegrown in Longo, Jennings, and Upton. However we have an entire rotation that is homegrown. Looking at AAA and AA, there is really nothing of any significance in the hitting/fielding department. Maybe Vogt and Beckham in AAA. Lee and maybe Bortnick in AA. Sale and Beckham look to both be disappointments. The Latin Academies should start becoming fruitful by now, but very little to show above A+. Can our organization develop hitters, or are we just going to develop pitchers and trade them for hitters?

    1. That's pretty much the big picture as far as my disappointment, the Rays ongoing problems with developing position players. The little picture is the 100 or so ABs this year.

There are some useful players in AAA (Guyer, Vogt, Brignac, maybe Figueroa, Ashley and Beckham). About the same number in AA (Lee, maybe Bortnick, Thomas, Wrigley and Kang). But other than Guyer, Vogt and esp Lee, not any guys you really feel confident will impact the Rays at some point until you get down into A-ball, and those guys are at least a couple years away.

    2. Well looking forward to the next couple of years, catcher, first base, center field, and SS will be our needs. Beckham/Lee will most likely help the SS situation, with Beckham possibly moving to CF in my opinion. Mathook hopefully will be an option in the OF as well by 2015. Vogt isn't going to end up at C, Ashley's time is running out. The reality is we don't have an option for catcher now, or in 2015. Bailey has been disappointing, and O'Connor is out again. So we may be ok in the next few years, other than depth. We really need to find a catcher.

  6. Hey Doug.....Iam curious ? Is it Hak Ju Lee's 7 errors.....or.....sub .250 batting avg.........or.....his utter lack of power...that have you so HIGH on him ? Just wondering ? Have you personally ever seen him play ?

  7. He has 6 errors in 31 games at short, not terrible. Above and below him Beckham has 4 in 13 games, Dietrich has 4 in 23, Hager 4 in 22. If you're just looking at errors, his fielding % improved quite a bit last year over his 1st two pro years, and it's about the same this year as last. His arm is strong enough, and I haven't seen anyone who thinks he'll have to move off short.

Between the end of last year and this year he's only hitting .217 overall in Montgomery, so yes, he's struggled. But he's faced AA pitchers as a 20 and 21 year-old, so I don't think anyone expected him to hit .320 at this point. Just like with his defense, not seeing many people who think he won't hit. As far as power, no he won't hit homeruns, just like most SS. But he's fast and will get a lot of 2B and 3Bs.

I haven't see him in person because he started with the Rays in FSL, I only see New York-Penn Lg, Midwest Lg and International Lg games up here, no FSL or Southern Lg. I've only seen him on video and milb-tv games with Montgomery, and he's looked about like most of the scouting stories I've read.

So overall I think he'll be fine, not a star probably, but regular at SS. It's not like there is anyone else in the org who looks to be any better than him (Rodriguez, Brignac, Beckham, Dietrich, Hager).
