Rays 4th Round Pick - 152nd Overall - RHP Nolan Gannon

BaseballAmerica (rated #285 overall):
Gannon, a San Diego State signee, is similar to Conor Baits--a big-bodied righthander with some arm strength. Like Baits, the 6-foot-5, 195-pound Gannon hasn't distinguished himself this spring, but he has flashed potential. Gannon works in the 87-90 range, bumping 91, with some run. His 73-78 mph curveball has promising downer action at times and is slurvy at others, but the pitch is improving and could become an average offering. He also has a serviceable changeup that needs improvement. Scouts question Gannon's delivery, which features a high front side, a short stride, a lack of extension out front and some recoil. His stuff could jump if he improves his mechanics.
PerfectGame:
Nolan Gannon is a 2012 RHP with a 6-5 195 lb. frame from San Diego, CA who attends Santa Fe Christian HS. Profile pitcher's build, long lean and projectable. Full hands over head delivery, high compact arm action, arm works well out front, good downhill angle to pitches. Steady 90-92 mph fastball, maintains velocity very well, good boring action on fastball when down. Raises release point on curveball to get over it, good spin and depth, 12/6 shape, will have to work on consistent release point to avoid tipping pitch to advanced hitters. Still developing change up. Very good right now and should keep getting better. Good student.

JUNE 6TH UPDATE: Gannon on signing:
"I'm ecstatic," said Gannon, who has signed to play at San Diego State. "I definitely will sign with the Rays. They're my favorite team, and I want to begin my professional career."

Gannon played for Tampa Bay's scout team and is close with Rays scout Jake Wilson, a former Ramona standout who used to scout for the Padres.

Gannon finished his senior season at SFC with a 9-2 record and a 0.82 ERA. He had 127 strikeouts, including 15 in a CIF San Diego Section Division IV title game win over Madison.

  1. Baseball draft report says:

88-92 FB; 70-77 CB that was inconsistent, but flashes plus when thrown harder; loses some velocity in-game, could be attributed to delivery hiccup; CU; 6-5, 200 pounds

So that says "Rays Draftee" to me.

  2. Gotta like those projectable H.S. pitchers!! Both Gannon and Carroll could add a few more MPH when they get stronger and their mechanics improve.

  4. It's easy to see Gannon getting into the mid 90s once he matures and gets stronger.

  5. Bad pick in the 4th! Seen him, not a 4th rounder.

  6. This site is a joke. You copy and paste PREMIUM content from other sites (Baseball America) and expect to be taken seriously? Just because you post the link to the content doesn't make it right. All the scouting reports you post from other sites in their entirety (especially premium content) is plagiarism. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.
