Rickard stepped right into the Wildcats lineup as a freshman playing in all 58 games (57 starts) hitting .307 with eight homers and 51 RBI. He also led the squad with 13 stolen bases in 21 attempts.
He continued his strong college career as a sophomore finishing second on the squad with a .347 batting average while hitting four homers and driving in 37 runs. He finished second on the team with 16 stolen bases in 24 attempts.
Rickard spent the summer of 2011 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He appeared in a total of 44 games with a .300 batting average and 18 RBI. He also chipped in 15 stolen bases on the summer. Joey was named a CCBL All-Star playing at the 2011 Cape Cod League All-Star game at Fenway Park as he went 0-1 in the game.

During his junior year at University of Arizona, ranked among Pac-12 conference leaders in runs (T-4th with 54), hits (T-11th with 75) and stolen bases (T-1st with 17)…was a 2012 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, 2011 All-Pac-10 First Team selection and a 2010 Pac-10 Honorable Mention.
Ranked by college coaches as the Pac-12’s most underrated hitter and best baserunner for College Baseball Insider prior to the 2012 season.
Played for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2011…named to the West Division Cape Cod All-Star Team.
Becomes the fifth Nevada-born player drafted by the Rays, joining Toby Hall (1997), Andrew Gans (2008), Jeff Malm (2009) and Jake Hager (2011) and the second out of Bishop Gorman High School (also Malm).
Is enrolled at University of Arizona in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences with a major in sociology.
His brother, John, was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 38th round of the 2008 June Draft out of Bishop Gorman (Nev.) HS.
It sounds like the Rays were trying to get RHP Alex Wilson out of Wofford in the 9th round, he ended up going to the Braves in the 15th:

“Their offers weren’t what I wanted, so I passed,” Wilson said. “They were trying to get me to sign for less than the slotted amount. They wanted me to go significantly lower. I wasn’t going to do that. And then the Braves came with something fair.”
